Concrete Construction Through the Years

Concrete construction techniques and technology have changed over and over throughout the history of concrete. Advances are made constantly – that’s what makes concrete construction such an exciting industry to be in, despite the fact that it may sound like a dry subject to outsiders. But just think: How many of the world’s major and most important structures are made from some form of concrete? It’s an incredible amount!

Take a look at this article by Concrete Construction magazine called Concrete Reinforcement Through the Years. It shows how concrete reinforcement has evolved from when it was first invented and used in 1961. According to the article:

The art and science of concrete construction has a long history, dating at least to ancient Rome. The development of reinforced concrete, on the other hand, is relatively recent, being scarcely one hundred years old. Numerous men and organizations in Europe and the United States have made major contributions to the understanding and use of reinforced concrete, and our purpose here will be to provide a quick review of some the high spots.

The article has a picture of each year they’ve called out, showing how technology improved. For instance, 1970 brought about bars with welded wire fabric.
