Automation Engineer Savage, MN 1.13.14

Purpose/Scope:

Automation Engineer position will work with multiple manufacturing teams to analyze and implement key automation/mechanization initiatives. Provides project engineering support to all process areas of the plant facilities. Determines the effectiveness and maintainability of automation systems and manages the automation change process for existing equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Team with local and corporate resources to apply automation experience in order to develop effective automation solutions.
  • Utilize design and visualization tools to model and convey automation concepts and proposals.
  • Assist in the preparation of budgets and estimate overall costs and justifications for initiatives.
  • Select, design, and coordinate the design of equipment. Facilitate the installation, start-up, and qualification of same to assure project goals are met. This will involve a combination of internal and external resources dependent upon the scope of the initiative.
  • Effectively structure and manage projects utilizing appropriate management tools. Communicate project updates and issues in an effective and timely manner.
  • Investigate and analyze customer problems and design improvement suggestions. Recommend design improvements through adaptations and modifications of standard technical principles.
  • Leading project teams and providing an interdisciplinary interface.
  • Ensuring that all deliverables are technically correct, coordinated with other disciplines, on-time and within budget.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose control systems and network problems and drive to a solution.
  • Create and maintain system specification documents and standard operating procedures for new and existing control equipment.
  • Prioritize multiple tasks
  • May perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field
  • Five years of engineering experience with PLC controls programming, HMI  systems, controls networks and database management in a manufacturing environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate within a team, across disciplines, and interface with clients
  • Ability to lead a project team by communicating essential information and providing interdisciplinary interface
  • In-depth experience with PLC Control Systems, like Rockwell Automation, Bosch-Rexroth or similar
  • Experience  in Human Machine Interfaces, including FT RSView, Wonderware, and Think’N'Do
  • Knowledge and programming skills needed for Allen Bradley ControlLogix, SCADA and Batch. OSI-PI historian, SQL database and VisualBasic would be a plus
  • Troubleshoot and maintain Ethernet, Controlnet, Allen-Bradley Remote I/O, and DeviceNet communication networks
  • Commissioning experience, Installation Qualification (IQ) and Operation Qualification (OQ)
  • Must be committed to safety, customer satisfaction, first time quality and efficiency

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Project management experience
  • A strong background in troubleshooting systems and data analysis skills are strongly preferred
  • Working knowledge of 480 volt/3 phase and 120 volt power distribution systems
  • Experience with Lean manufacturing and continuous improvement principles
  • Experience with ISO 9001

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to climb up and down moving equipment
